National Mushroom Day

Alas! It's World Mushroom Day! This October 15th let's get the party spore-ted with a few fun facts.. Did you know…?

🍄 Mushrooms are more closely related to animals than plants? They absorb nutrients from their surroundings rather than making their own food through photosynthesis.

🍄 Without fungi, forests would be buried in their own leftovers? Fungi are nature’s original recyclers. They break down dead leaves, fallen trees, and other organic matter, returning essential nutrients to the soil.

🍄 The forest has its own underground internet? Fungal mycelium forms intricate networks beneath our feet, connecting with plant roots and helping exchange nutrients. The original World Wide Web? More like the Wood Wide Web!

🍄 Some fungi can help trees communicate and cooperate? Through mycorrhizal relationships, fungi and plants exchange resources in ways that help sustain entire ecosystems.

🍄 The mushroom we see is only part of the story? The fruiting body is just one expression of a much larger organism, often connected to an extensive network of mycelium hidden underground.

🍄 Some mushrooms actually glow in the dark? Certain fungi are bioluminescent, meaning they produce their own light through a chemical reaction.

🍄 Scientists estimate that millions of fungal species exist, and many are still waiting to be discovered? There are entire worlds beneath our feet that we haven't even met yet!

Each year the fascination around fungi grows & grows! With all the mysteries of the fungal kingdom and all the many ways these remarkable organisms invite us to slow down, get curious, and reconnect with the natural world… What’s not to get excited about?

So today, take a moment to appreciate the mushrooms growing beneath the trees, the mycelium weaving its magic underground, and the incredible web of life that connects us all as one big mushy loving familyđź«‚

Hope you all have a spor-tacular day honouring these weird & whimsical allies of the forest!

What's your favourite thing about fungi?

Mush love!
