Psychoactive, psychotropic, or psychedelic... Aren't they all the same?
-Psychoactive is the broad umbrella—it includes any substance that changes how the brain functions.
-Psychotropic usually refers to substances (especially medications) that influence mood, thinking, or behaviour and are often used in mental health care.
-Psychedelic is a specific type of psychoactive substance that can profoundly alter perception, consciousness, and one's sense of self.
These words are often used interchangeably online, but they each have distinct meanings and nuances. Understanding the language helps us have more informed, respectful conversations about these substances.
I have spent a lot of time educating folks who want to quickly shut down Amanita for being psychoactive… For example, Wix taking away payment options on the website due to me selling psychoactive substances? Are they also shutting down any sites selling coffee? Alcohol? Nicotine? Me thinks not…
One of the main differences between Amanita, coffee, nicotine and alcohol? Amanita is not addictive… Amanita can actually help you overcome your addiction to coffee, nicotine and alcohol! In Baba Masha’s Microdosing with Amanita Muscaria book there are plenty of anecdotal reports of how effective Amanita works with supporting folks who are struggling with addiction and not just with these substances but with even harsher drugs like benzodiazepines…
